Local knowledge

Treasure Valley trees have Treasure Valley problems

This isn’t the Pacific Northwest. Our trees deal with alkaline soils, long dry summers, irrigation-dependent root systems, hard freezes and the downslope wind events that come off the foothills every spring and fall.

  • Cottonwoods and silver maples — fast-growing, weak-wooded, and responsible for a large share of the storm damage we clean up.
  • Elms — common in older Boise neighborhoods and prone to co-dominant leaders that split.
  • Blue spruce — widely planted, increasingly stressed by heat and drought, with disease following.
  • Irrigation-dependent roots — trees grown on flood or ditch irrigation decline fast when that water changes.
  • Foothills fuel loads — sage and bitterbrush right up against houses in wildland-interface neighborhoods.
